DEO
What is a detachment of earnings order (DEO)?
An order sent to your employer, from the CSA to request ongoing maintenance, and most likely any arrears owing on your account
Why would the CSA issue a DEO?
If any NRP is categorised as non-compliant or has had problems paying child support payments in the past. If A NRP cannot reach an agreement to repay arrears with the CSA, which both deem satisfactory.
How much can the CSA take legally?
All DEO’s have a protected income threshold; this is dependent on the individual circumstances of the NRP. The protected income level cannot be breached. The most the CSA can request on any DEO is 40% of income. * This should only be used in certain circumstances i.e. the NRP is non-compliant: The welfare of ALL children should be considered, including children living in a NRP household.
Can my employer refuse to pay?
Simple answer NO If your employer failed to comply, they would be committing a criminal offence
Can my employer charge me?
Yes £1-00 per deduction
Can I appeal against a decision to action a DEO?
NO there is no right to appeal; we believe this breaching HRA right to a fair trial.
What happens if my wages are short one week?
Any shortfall is taken from subsequent weeks until the payment is paid in full
What if I cannot afford other commitments, like my mortgage/rent?
Unbelievably the CSA do not deal with other commitments on CS2, CS1 housing should be recognised in the protected. However child support is considered a priority debt, and thus more important.
What if my DEO puts my new family into poverty?
Sadly the CSA and government are failing to accept this, which is why we are asking our members to support the “ENDING CHILD POVERTY CAMPAIGN”. It is fact the current debt steer is placing second families including children into poverty.
Do the CSA have procedures to follow when issuing a DEO?
Yes they do, this is covered at length in our forum. It is evident at the time of writing this procedure was NOT being followed according to law.
DEO’s are available as a voluntary payment option along with standing order, direct debit etc. Though this may seem convenient, they are difficult to remove.
For this reason afairercsaforall do not recommend this option .
Just had a surprise DEO dropped on me
This is just unbelieveable. I have had no contact from the CSA for three years, until recently when they asked me for pay slips. 2 days after I sent my payslips they were returned. 2 days after that I had a letter from the CSA saying the change of circumstances (of which I was unaware) would not impact my current status. There was no mention of payments, arrears, etc.
Today (6 weeks after contact) I got my wage slip and was staggered, and frantic to discover a DEO for £681 a month. I have had no notice, no letter, no notification AT ALL. And now am at least £200 per month bellow my absolute minimum payment. I just don't know where to turn or what to do next.
It's also worth mentioning that I have no contact with my son due to my ex (his mum) being malicious during the time when my new partner had cancer (she has since passed away) I have been in touch with my ex since February, emailing regularly, but with no luck. I have no contact, and now no money, or hope of recovering from the loss of my partner and the debts her illness caused.
The best thing I can do is quit my job and be a bum, at least my rent and bills would get paid.
Where's the Justice? What sort of government blatently ROBS from the people, with no regard for procedure, or the ability to survive?

Hi its me again, I did not have any choice with the deduction in wages order, they just sent me a letter telling me this what they was going to do and then sent the deduction to my employer, I never voluntary entered into this, was they allowed to this.
